De-Escalation Strategies Poster
This FREE printable poster is an easy way to display de-escalation strategies or calm down strategies for your students. 8 different posters to choose from!
Below is a list of each strategy & ideas we use in our classroom for each:
• READ ➡️ I Spy books, joke books, preferred picture books, or current chapter book
• DRAW ➡️ Drawing pads or drawing journals
• DRINK WATER➡️ Walk to get a drink of water
• COLOR ➡️ Coloring books, adult coloring books, coloring squares
• TIGHT SQUEEZE ➡️ Ask for a tight squeeze from an adult (deep pressure can really help de-escalate)
• PUZZLE ➡️ Puzzles, wooden puzzles, puzzles on the IPad
• STRETCH ➡️ Stretch your body on your own or following a cosmic yoga video
• HUG A STUFFED ANIMAL ➡️ Find a favorite stuffed animal OR pillow and hug it tight
• REST ➡️ Take time to relax (maybe even nap)
• QUIET SPACE ➡️ Find a quiet space OR use noise cancelling headphones
• SENSORY BREAKS ➡️ Orobeads, weighted blankets, body sock, cold water activities, ball massage, brushing, kinetic sand
• SNACK ➡️ Eat a snack
• FIDGET BREAK ➡️ Stress ball, putty, coil bracelet, fidget cubes, fidget spinners, elastic bands
• COLD PACK ➡️ Put an ice pack on the warmest part of your body (this is a dominant sensory strategy that will help distract & override other emotions)
• TALK WITH A TRUSTED ADULT ➡️ Discuss a list of trusted adults early on (have more than 2 adults in case they are busy during the time of escalation)
• COMFY SEAT ➡️ Find a comfy seat - rocking chair or bean bag
• EXERCISE BREAK ➡️ GoNoodle, Running Hallway, Exercise Cards around school
• MUSIC➡️ Listen to Music
• DEEP BREATHS ➡️ With an adult or on your own
• BRAIN TEASERS ➡️ Rubix Cube, dot-to-dots, maze, brain teaser books
